Letting Go of My Selfishness
June 22, 2008
On a human level it is difficult for us to be selfless. Self-centered thinking is natural but it is not God’s design for us; and does not promote healthy relationships where His love can abound. Selfishness leads to all kinds of problems including: immorality, greed, obscenity, foolish talk and coarse joking. All of these things are hurtful to ourselves and to everyone around us. Adopting the practice of sincerely praying like this, from Psalm 139, “Search me and know my heart. Try me and know my thoughts. See if there is any wicked way in me,” is an act of humility and it makes our view God-centered.
When we make God the center, He begins to work in our hearts, making a way for His love to flow through us onto others. This needs to be an ongoing process for each one of us, asking the Holy Spirit to work in us, daily. As we submit our will to God, face the truth, keep Eternity in view and choose to love others more than self, we adopt the attitude of Christ Jesus. This brings us into maturity in Christ, where we are most effective at captivating others with His love.
